Perhaps the 2018 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s most challenging endurance race, finally will be Toyota’s time to shine. Like last year, qualifying results placed the pair of Toyota TS050 Hybrids on the pole and No. 2 starting positions for the race, which began Saturday at 9 a.m. ET (3 p.m. in France) and ends Sunday at the same time.
This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, presented in the U.S. exclusively on Velocity, features perhaps the strongest group of Toyota drivers ever. Among those manning the pole-sitting No. 8 TS050 Hybrid is two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso. In both of the last two years in the LMP1 class, Porsche has stolen victory from Toyota, which has experienced differing issues.
The highest-qualifying LMP2 team (10th overall) was the No. 48 Oreca 07. The pair of Porsche 911 RSRs were fastest in qualifying for GTE Pro, but both Porsche and Ford were given weight increases for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, per Motorsport.com. Corvette, BMW and Aston Martin were able to shed some weight for the race based on qualifying results.
The culmination of storylines for the 86th running of the French endurance classic at the famous Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France, was expected make for an intriguing race from beginning to end. Follow along for live updates from the 2018 24 Hours of Le Mans.
