England made good use of the conditions on offer at Lord’s on the second day as James Anderson accounted for India’s openers Murali Vijay and KL Rahul before multiple rain breaks forced the players to take an early Lunch.
Both teams went in with different strategies as India opted to play their second spinner in the form of Kuldeep Yadav in place of Umesh Yadav whereas Chris Woakes got the nod for England ahead of Moeen Ali.
Having picked four seamers in the playing XI, Joe Root got what he wanted, as England chose to bowl on an overcast morning of the Test match that has already lost the entire opening day to rain.
Anderson started off with some outswingers that weren’t troubling Vijay outside the offstump but the veteran was quick to readjust his line and bowl one on off and middle which swung away a touch to hit timber. Vijay thought it fit to play across the line, allowing England to strike very early in the game.
Under-pressure batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who returned to the XI at the expense of Shikhar Dhawan, was also tested early by Anderson and Stuart Broad, but it was the tentative-looking Rahul who had to depart next. After smashing an overpitched delivery from Broad to open India’s account, Rahul found the going tough against Anderson, who continued to move the ball away to cause problems.
Rahul nicked one outswinger to the wicketkeeper while trying to defend which laid the platform for another duel between Anderson and Virat Kohli. The Indian skipper faced just a couple of deliveries before rain arrived to provide India some temporary relief.
Brief scores: India 11/2 (James Anderson 2-6) vs England
