Astros catcher Brian McCann is targeting a Friday return from the disabled list after missing a little more than a week with a sore right knee.
McCann, 34, was batting just .219 with four home runs and 14 RBIs before the injury. He underwent an extensive workout Tuesday to evaluate his knee.
“Today was definitely a step in the right direction,” McCann said, via mlb.com. “I got in my catcher’s squat and started moving around a little bit, played long toss and hit. I’m looking forward to coming off [the disabled list].”
Max Stassi has been filling in for McCann, and he entered Tuesday batting .273 with five home runs and 17 RBIs this season. He should still see plenty of game time while McCann deals with is oft-ailing knee.
The Astros should also get outfielder Josh Reddick back this week. Reddick has been out since May 20 with a with a staph infection above his left knee.
