Capitals vs. Lightning: Live updates from Game 6

(All times Eastern.)

Second Period

9:22 p.m. — The Lightning counter with on a 2-on-1 break. Miller finds Cirelli, who fires a backhand that Holtby just gets a pad on. High-quality chances coming quickly at both ends.

9:18 p.m. — Great chance for Burakovsky! The Capitals forward turns on the jets and gets behind the Tampa defense, but he can’t stuff the puck past Vasilevskiy.

9:15 p.m. — Holtby fends off a Stamkos one-timer and the Capitals manage to clear the zone a few times to kill off the Beagle infringement.

9:12 p.m. — Tampa will get the game’s first power play as Jay Beagle is whistled for hooking 40 seconds into the period. The Lightning are 6-15 on the man-advantage so far this series.

9:11 p.m. — The puck is dropped for the start of the second period. We’re still scoreless (mostly thanks to Vasilevskiy). Orpik and Miller are still in the box, serving the end of their fighting majors.

First Period

Shots: Capitals 8, Lightning 6

8:53 p.m. — Dan Girardi, who moments ago got away with a questionable hit on Ovechkin in the neutral zone, fires a point shot that Holtby handles easily as the final seconds of an entertaining first period expire.

8:50 p.m. — Big chance for Kuznetsov! The Capitals forward finds the puck in a goalmouth scramble, kicks the puck from his skate to his stick, but somehow Vasilevskiy gets a glove to it from his back.

8:46 p.m. — Ovechkin fires a shot that strikes the glass behind Vasilevskiy’s goal. The Capitals recover the puck and fire it to the front, where Ovechkin has a redirected effort padded away by the Lightning goaltender.

8:44 p.m. — The Capitals struggle to get the puck out of their zone and as soon as Lars Eller finally manages to, a scrum breaks out behind the play between JT Miller and Brooks Orpik. The pair will head to their respective dressing rooms as their five-minute fighting penalties will carry over into the second period.

8:33 p.m. — Slow change by the Lightning gives Orlov some space to shoot from the point, but his drive is guided just wide of the net by the glove of Vasilevskiy. Ovechkin follows the play up with a huge hit on Yanni Gourde.

8:29 p.m. — Tampa responds with some offensive zone pressure, but the Capitals do well to get in the shooting lanes and block a pair of shot attempts. On the other end, Ovechkin finally gets the puck in the slot, but Vasilevskiy comes up with a big blocker save.

8:23 p.m. — Alex Ovechkin tries to finesse his way to the net on two seperate occasions, but is denied by some good positional awareness by Dan Girardi.

8:18 p.m. — Big early hit by Tom Wilson on Game 5 goalscorer Cedric Paquette. The Lightning forward hits the ice hard and slides into the boards, but seems to be okay to continue.

8:15 p.m. — The puck is dropped and we are underway in Game 6.
