O’Connell played only three minutes before taking an unintentional elbow to the face. He’s expected to make a full recovery before the start of the season. He averaged 3.3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 10.4 minutes per game last season.
“He got hit with an elbow,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the game. “I’m not saying it was intentional, but he got hit. We’re worried about his eye and the socket to see what happened.”
Duke is also without point guard Tre Jones and forward Cam Reddish for the entirety of the Canada trip, so that should leave even more of the burden on star freshmen R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson.
Duke’s tour in Canada continues Friday with a game against the University of Toronto.
