England's 1000th – The journey so far

As England take field for their 1000th Test, here’s a list of trivia, stats and tidbits that will help you know their journey so far a little better.

If you’re an aspiring England player, what’s a good name to have?

Ans: Smith

There’s none in the current line-up but there have been as many as fifteen Smiths to have played for England. They have featured in 154 Tests for England. There has also been one Smithson apart from these.

If you’re an aspiring England player, what’s the best date to make a debut?

And what’s the best day to, erm, be born?

25 December seems to be the D-Day. Players born on this day have amassed a whopping 18277 runs. But 24 November (18218 runs) won’t be a bad pick either.

There are a total of eighteen different counties to pick eleven players from. But only four times in 999 Test matches have the eleven been from different counties.

England cricket’s first family?

England have had a reputation of being a highly accommodating team to players from other countries. But did you know that they went in twice with just four players born in England?

For most teams a standout bowler or batsman contributes significantly to the total runs or wickets for a team. But England’s an anomaly.

Teams welcomed into Test cricket by England

Six of the eight oldest Test teams played their inaugural Test against England – Australia in 1877, South Africa in 1889, West Indies in 1928, New Zealand in 1930, India in 1932 and Sri Lanka in 1982. The only team against whom England wasn’t the opponent in the maiden Test was Pakistan who played India in 1952.

England – the only side to play two Tests simultaneously

MCC sent two squads to play WI and NZ simultaneously in 1930 – 8700 miles apart. The only time when the two sides played together was on Feb 22, 1930 – the first session of the second day of the fourth Test in Auckland and the last session of the first day of the third Test in Georgetown.

Whose phone might have the longest contact list of England Test cricketers?

Ans: Graham Gooch

What’s significant about England’s Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong, 2016?

Gareth Batty, who held the record for missing most consecutive Tests (142), returned to Tests after an 11-year hiatus. In that particular Test, Alastair Cook went past Alec Stewart’s record for most Test appearances for England. Cook made his debut in 2006, almost a year after Batty’s first England stint ended. Cook’s ongoing sequence of 154 consecutive Tests in a record for most consecutive appearances.

The inseparables – Cook and Broad

England have not been known for blooding in someone too young. They once fielded a side with an average age of 37 years and 188 days!

Sticking to the right

Not only don’t they field as many youngsters as others, they strangely haven’t had a good left-arm seamer. Among the eight oldest Test playing teams, England is the only side which doesn’t have a left-arm seamer with 100-plus wickets. Bill Voce leads the list with 98 scalps. The other seven teams have 16 players among them in the club.

Did you know?

The only Test player who hasn’t batted, bowled or effected a dismissal

Jack MacBryan (He scored 18 centuries for Somerset and played hockey in 1920 Olympics, four years before his only Test)

The only player whose career spanned over 10,000 days

Wilfred Rhodes made his debut in June 1899 and played his last Test in April 1930 – a career that spanned for 11273 days (30y 316d). No other player’s career spanned for 10000-plus days or 30-plus years.

Longest standing individual records

England’s highest individual Test score was made by Len Hutton (364 vs Aus, Oval, 1938) and their best bowing figures belong to Jim Laker (10/53 vs Aus, Manchester, 1956). Only Australia’s best bowling figures has stayed on longer.
