Guyana Amazon Warriors demolished Jamaica Tallawahs and snatched the top spot in the points table with a 71-run win in Florida on Saturday (August 18). Shimron Hetmyer smashed a 49-ball 100 – his maiden T20 ton – as Warriors posted 209 for 7. Imran Tahir and Chris Green then collaborated to land the knockout punch as Tallawahs could manage just 138 all out in 16.2 overs.
Despite losing Chadwick Walton in the second over, Warriors got off to a solid start as Hetmyer came out all guns blazing. He helped the team race past 50 inside the powerplay with little contribution from his partner Luke Ronchi. However, it was the stand with Shoaib Malik (50) that set the base for the big score.
They scored 108 in the next nine overs to propel the side past 150 and leave the lower-order five overs to launch the final assault. Hetmyer fell in the 15th over to Oshane Thomas and there was a late fightback from Tallawahs but they failed to nullify the damage.
Tallawahs were well placed in the chase with Glenn Phillips (43) and Ross Taylor (30) taking the team forward. They had 82 on the board for the loss of just one wicket in the eighth over. However, the wicket of Taylor helped Warriors come storming back and close out the contest.
David Miller, Andre Russell, Rovman Powell and Imad Wasim failed to keep the chase alive and were dismissed in quick successions to leave the team in a hole. Tahir picked up 2 for 26 while Green picked up 2 for 19 from his four overs as Warriors posted their third win in four games.
Brief scores: Guyana Amazon Warriors 209/7 in 20 overs (Shimron Hetmyer 100) beat Jamaica Tallawahs 138 in 16.2 overs (Chris Green 2-19) by 71 runs.
