Hello and welcome to the live blog of the T20I tri-series game between Zimbabwe and Australia in Harare.
The Australian batting ran out of fuel on Thursday, coming to a crashing halt when skipper Aaron Finch got out early. After his dismissal, the rest of the batsmen couldn’t generate enough firepower against Pakistan. The loss meant that their No. 1 aspirations in T20I cricket went up in smoke but their next tri-series game against Zimbabwe, although an inconsequential one – with the finalists already decided – gives Australia the opportunity to address the issues with their batting. Meanwhile, for the hosts, it’s now only about trying to salvage some pride.
After losing five of their best T20 players due to the financial crisis, Zimbabwe tried different combinations but it didn’t help them achieve the desired results. Having lacked a collective performance so far, one final crack against Australia is all they have before they switch formats to play a five-match ODI series against Pakistan. Solomon Mire, Tendai Chisoro, and Tarasai Musakanda displayed plenty of potential. But Zimbabwe will be hoping for the rest of the players to also step up and help the team go out on a high note.
Entering this series in a state of quandary, Australia have done their bit to put behind some of the past misfortunes – riding on Finch’s belligerence and fine performances with the ball from Billy Stanlake and Andrew Tye for a couple of commanding victories. However, the loss against Pakistan yet again exposed their vulnerability with the bat and their dependence on their captain. Considering their batting frailties they might be tempted to bat first against Zimbabwe, should they win the toss, in order to give their batsmen sufficient time in the middle to iron out the flaws and get their game in order ahead of the summit clash.
