Smriti Mandhana’s incredible run of form in the Women’s Super League continued as she scored a fine half-century and added a 101-run first-wicket stand off just 58 deliveries with Rachel Priest as Western Storm chased down Yorkshire Diamonds’ 172/5 with four balls to spare.
Opting to bat first, the Diamonds made an even better start, with captain Lauren Winfield and Beth Mooney putting on 113 runs together in 13.4 overs. But both were gone by the end of the 15th over, allowing Storm to claw their way back.
And claw they did as a couple of wickets tumbled. Chamari Athapaththu’s 14-ball 20 enabled them to stretch their total to 172, which looked competitive at the half-way stage.
But Mandhana swiftly ensured that wasn’t the case as she and Priest smashed their way to a fantastic partnership. Even for Storm, both the set batsmen departed in quick succession, but captain Heather Knight saw off the chase with an unbeaten 45 to help her side to a fourth successive victory.
Brief scores: Yorkshire Diamonds 172/5 in 20 overs (Beth Mooney 69; Heather Knight 1-27) lost to Western Storm 174/3 in 19.2 overs (Smriti Mandhana 56; Katie Levick 1-16) by seven wickets.
