The Nationals are close to adding a reliever.
Washington is nearing a deal with veteran Greg Holland, according to a report from Fancred Sports’ Jon Heyman. The 32-year-old right hander cleared waivers after he was cut by the Cardinals this week.
Holland signed a one-year, $14 million deal with St. Louis in late March. But he registered an 0-2 record with a 7.92 ERA in 32 games before he was released.
Holland had 41 saves and was an All-Star with the Rockies last season. He also made back-to-back All-Star appearances with the Royals in 2013 and 2014.
The Nationals acquired reliever Kelvin Herrera from the Royals in exchange for three minor leaguers in mid-June. Washington closer Sean Doolittle is currently on the disabled list with a toe injury.
The Nationals finished play Sunday third in the National League East with a 57-54 record. They trail the division-leading Phillies by six games.
