NBA Draft 2018 rumors: Hawks select Luka Doncic, trade him to Dallas for Trae Young

The Hawks selected Real Madrid’s Luka Doncic with the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, but he will never play a game in an Atlanta uniform.

The Hawks picked Doncic and then traded him to the Mavericks, according to a report from ESPN. Dallas drafted Oklahoma guard Trae Young at No. 5 and sent him to Atlanta, along with a future first rounder.

The Hawks may try and deal starting point guard Dennis Schroder to the Clippers for the No. 13 pick, according to a report from Atlanta TV station WSB.

The potential trade between Dallas and Atlanta had been losing momentum prior to the draft, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Dallas preferred to send the fifth and 33rd pick to Atlanta in exchange for No. 3. But, the Hawks were not interested in that deal, according to a report from The Athletic.

The teams had previously been discussing a trade including Dallas forward Wesley Matthews and Hawks guard Kent Bazemore.

The 19-year-old Doncic was a star in Europe in 2017-18. He was named the EuroLeague MVP and his Real Madrid team won the league title.

Young averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game as a freshman at Oklahoma last season.

The Hawks finished last season with a 24-58 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2006-07.
