In an already-historic first season, the Vegas Golden Knights seek to become the first expansion team to reach the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season when they visit the Winnipeg Jets in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final Sunday afternoon at Bell MTS Place.
Leading the best-of-seven 3-1, the Golden Knights have serious odds in their favor, needing to win one of the remaining three games in order to punch a ticket to the Final. Considering the fact Vegas has lost only three times the entire postseason, the Golden Knights are heavy favorites to establish more history.
Of course, the Jets still present a major obstacle to the Golden Knights. The Jets won the series opener on home ice before dropping three tightly-contested contests, including a pair Sin City to put their season on the brink.
Winnipeg will have the raucous Whiteout on its side, as well as the NHL’s top goal scorer in the postseason — Mark Scheifele has 14 goals — and one of the league’s most explosive scorers in Patrik Laine, who scored a big goal in Game 4.
The Jets also survived one must-win game already this postseason, beating the Nashville Predators 4-2 in Game 7 of the second round. All-time, the Jets are 1-2 in playoff elimination games.
While the Golden Knights have not lit up the scoreboard throughout the playoffs, they are a league-best 11-3 in the postseason, backed by an outstanding 1.86 team GAA. Marc-Andre Fleury is a leading candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy with a 1.72 GAA, .945 save percentage and a league-best four shutouts.
