Renshaw anchors Somerset's 248-run chase

Somerset vs Nottinghamshire, Taunton

Somerset waltzed to the top of the Division One points table after an absorbing final day’s play in Taunton. Matt Renshaw scored 61 and received vital support from Tom Abell (46*) and Steven Davies (44*) as the hosts chased down a target of 248 with a little over an hour to spare.

Despite showing signs of wear and tear, the Taunton surface remained largely intact to facilitate this tricky chase as long as those that batted on it retained composure. Renshaw, as ever, was a picture of quiet confidence barring one chance when on 42 when he cleared the long-on fielder. He followed his first-innings century with a largely assured 61 before Matthew Carter had him caught at slip. George Bartlett added 96 for the second wicket with Renshaw before the Abell and Davies took over for the final stretch of the chase. The duo added 87 in the post-tea session in just 17 overs to ensure Abell’s decision of not enforcing the follow on wasn’t misplaced.

Brief scores: Somerset 392 & 250/4 (Matt Renshaw 61, Tom Abell 46*; Matthew Carter 3-82) beat Nottinghamshire 134 & 505 (Tom Moores 103, Steven Mullaney 94; Roelof van der Merve 4-138) by six wickets.
