Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) has named former India players Virender Sehwag, Aakash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi as members of the cricket committee with former India opener Gautam Gambhir being a special invitee. The cricket committee is mandated to supervise the appointment of selectors and coaches and also look after cricketing matters.
Gambhir’s inclusion in the panel is a surprise choice as he is still playing active cricket but will have a role in appointing Delhi selectors.
Sehwag is an expert in a channel run by newly-elected DDCA president Rajat Sharma, a fact which has raised questions. However, Sharma defended Sehwag’s inclusion. “First of all, Sehwag is a world-class cricketer who has immense contribution to international cricket. That’s why he is a commentator and a respected cricket expert. We are honoured to have him in the cricket committee. Sehwag is known for being firm and fair. No one can question his credentials because of any of his roles,” Sharma told TOI on Wednesday (July 25).
Sanghvi had to relinquish his position as a Delhi selector two years ago since he is actively involved with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. However, this time, his role in Delhi cricket is likely to be honorary.
Sharma in a press release stated that the appointments have been done as per the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee recommendations.
DDCA secretary Vinod Tihara said that the association wanted big names in the committee as they are aware of the needs of contemporary cricket. “You want the best brains to work. All of them are aware of the situation and they have agreed to go ahead with their roles,” Tihara told TOI.
