Tash Farrant has been picked in the England Women squad for the T20I tri-series against South Africa and New Zealand. Katie George and Lauren Winfield will also join the squad for the double-header on June 23.
Katherine Brunt, Laura Marsh and Sarah Taylor, who weren’t part of the squad that played the T20I series in India, too returned to the side while Kate Cross, Alice Davidson-Richards, Alex Hartley, Bryony Smith and Fran Wilson failed to find a place. Brunt has recovered from the back injury and made a successful return in the ODIs against South Africa.
Mark Robinson, the coach, acknowledged he was pleased with the depth they’ve built in the lead up to the T20 World Cup. “In selecting this squad, we’ve had the opportunity to consider our England Women’s Senior Academy fixtures against South Africa and New Zealand and it’s heartening to see so much competition for places,” he said.
“We saw some excellent individual performances in those games – Sophia Dunkley hit 91 against New Zealand, Emma Lamb and Freya Davies have bowled well and Bryony Smith made an outstanding 92 yesterday against South Africa. There’s a growing number of players beginning to make cases for selection which is a reflection of the depth that’s starting to emerge and that’s exciting.”
England play their first match against South Africa on June 20 before playing the double-header on June 23. They will then play New Zealand on June 28 and the final is scheduled for July 1 in Chelmsford.
Squad: Heather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Katherine Brunt, Sophie Ecclestone, Georgia Elwiss, Tash Farrant, Jenny Gunn, Danielle Hazell, Amy Jones (wk), Laura Marsh, Anya Shrubsole, Nat Sciver, Sarah Taylor (wk), Danni Wyatt.
