Vellaswamy Vanitha composed a fine 51 while Mansi Joshi and Anuja Patil shared two spoils each as India Blue thumped India Red by eight wickets in the Women’s T20 Challenger Trophy in Alur, on Friday (August 17). India Blue chased down the paltry target of 85 in the 18th over.
In pursuit of a modest target, Dayalan Hemalatha was dismissed by Shikha Pandey for just eight, with the score reading 14 for 1. Incidentally, the Chennai-born batter had this year played for India ‘A’ versus the touring England side.
However, Mithali Raj (23*) and Vanitha, who has played 22 internationals for her country, shared an alliance of 58 for the second wicket to put Blue on course for an easy win. Once Vanitha was castled by Deepti Sharma, Raj and Patil steered Blue home.
Earlier, Punam Raut top-scored for Red with a 44-ball 28. Only three other batters were able to reach the double-digit mark as Red lost wickets at regular intervals. Aditi Sharma, batting at No.8, finished with an unbeaten 15 and ensured that Red would at least bat out the overs.
Despite losing the game, Red sit at top of the table with two wins from three matches. Meanwhile, it turned out to be Blue’s first win of the tournament as they sit at the third place behind Green.
Brief scores: India Women Red 84/7 in 20 overs (Punam Raut 28; Anuja Patil 2-15) lost to India Women Blue 86/2 in 17.4 overs (Vellaswamy Vanitha 51; Shikha Pandey 1-11) by eight wickets.
